1901 Sterling Silver Engraved Leaf & Shield Vesta Locket / Pendant - Chester
This antique vesta case is made from sterling silver. It was originally designed to be hung from a gentleman’s pocket watch chain, to hold matches to keep them safe and dry (the ridged bit on the base was for striking them), but today you can pop any little keepsake inside. It’s hand engraved all over with an acanthus leaf design and there’s an empty corner on one side for engraving initials. It’s hallmarked on the rim of the lid, from the Chester Assay Office, with the date letter for 1901. There’s a jump ring at the side for hanging.
The main body of the vesta measures 3.8cm long, 2.8cm wide and 0.8cm deep. Weighs 14 grams.
Condition: Good uncleaned antique condition. The lid snaps shut fully and stays closed as it should. The silver has some dinks throughout, commensurate with its age, and this is reflected in the price.
