Antique Japanese Shakudo Mixed Metal Fan Brooch with Cranes
Here I have an antique Japanese mixed metal (shakudo) brooch. It’s in the shape of an open fan, and it’s decorated with 2 cranes - one with wings outstretched and the other preening. They stand among flowers and leaves. Dates from the Meiji period, 1868 - 1912.
The back has its original brass and steel brooch fitting. This has been reinforced with lead solder at some point which looks messy from the back, but isn’t visible when wearing. This is reflected in the price.
Measures 5.0cm wide and 3.1cm high. It weighs 13.6 grams.
Condition: Good uncleaned antique condition. As mentioned, the pin on the back has been reinforced with lead solder at some point and the hinge’s original pin looks like it’s been replaced with a steel pin. The front is in good order, with just minor rubbing to some of the mixed metal when viewed through a loupe.
